Virtual reality training system for direct ophthalmoscopy

High-end simulator

Lifelike training environment

Eyesi Direct provides a close-to-life training of device handling by mimicking all features of a real direct ophthalmoscope. The simulator features a patient model head and an ophthalmoscope handpiece that looks and feels just like a real ophthalmoscope. The touchscreen displays the user interface with patient information, examination settings menu and a live view of the examination. The dynamic 3D simulation of the virtual patients is rendered in real time, allowing for a highly immersive training experience.

Standardized curriculum

Step-by-step to expert performance

Eyesi Direct offers a standardized curriculum for self-guided training of large classes. The case database of the simulator contains a selection of clinically relevant variations of the retina. By consecutively completing all courses, trainees acquire a profound level of knowledge and recognize relevant pathological findings.

Self-guided training

Procedural guidance and medical background information

The Eyesi Direct curriculum has been designed for self-guided training. Guidance elements, medical background information and immediate feedback after each case help trainees to systematically improve their skills. Trainees advance through the curriculum independently by successfully completing the cases within a course. Required minimum scores ensure that trainees meet a defined skill level.

Feedback & evaluation

Eyesi Direct provides both trainees and educators with an objective performance assessment. Scored parameters include the percentage of retina examined, light exposure, completeness of pathological signs found, and the accuracy of the diagnosis.

Online administration of users and classes

VRmNet for educators

VRmNet is a web service for networked simulators from Haag-Streit Simulation. Educators can use VRmNet to easily set up users and classes. Trainees then receive a welcome email with their login information. After logging in to their personal dashboard, they have access to an orientation course to help them get started with their simulator training. Educators can monitor their student’s progress online.

Online learning resources

VRmNet for students

For trainees, the web based VRmNet dashboard offers access to their current training status and performance evaluation. Furthermore, a personal findings library provides students with medical background information for recap of the learning matter. The VRmNet dashboard can be accessed online from any computer or mobile device.

Validated training methods

Numerous studies have validated the training concepts of training simulators by Haag-Streit Simulation and have proven that beginners, residents, and experienced doctors benefit from simulator training.
