A systematic review of 33 studies comparing rebound tonometry [SM1] and Goldmann applanation tonometry (GAT) shows that these two methods cannot be considered exchangeable. [SM2] Several trials showed deviations of ±3 mmHg or more in over 20% of cases, particularly in eyes with higher intraocular pressure (IOP) levels.
These findings reinforce the importance of using Goldmann applanation tonometers, such as the Haag-Streit AT 900 or AT 870, for eye care professionals who rely on consistent and clinically proven measurements.
