Comparison of ICare and IOPen vs Goldmann applanation tonometry according to international standards 8612 in glaucoma patients

Accurate intraocular pressure (IOP) readings are especially important in glaucoma care. A recent study confirmed that Goldmann applanation tonometry (GAT) is the most reliable method for measuring intraocular pressure in glaucoma patients, especially when ISO 8612 compliance is required. This further establishes GAT as the clinical gold standard.

[Is There Really Agreement between Rebound and Goldmann Applanation Tonometry Methods? Results of a Systematic Review of the Period 01/2005 to 08/2014]

A systematic review of 33 studies comparing rebound tonometry [SM1] and Goldmann applanation tonometry (GAT) shows that these two methods cannot be considered exchangeable. [SM2] Several trials showed deviations of ±3 mmHg or more in over 20% of cases, particularly in eyes with higher intraocular pressure (IOP) levels.

These findings reinforce the importance of using Goldmann applanation tonometers, such as the Haag-Streit AT 900 or AT 870, for eye care professionals who rely on consistent and clinically proven measurements.
