Biography

Prof. Dr. med. Gerd U. Auffarth, FEBO, is an esteemed ophthalmologist with over 33 years of experience. He is currently the Professor and Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at the University Hospital Heidelberg in Germany. With an impressive CV, he has obtained a license for medical practice and specialization in ophthalmology and has a habilitation in the field. Dr. Auffarth has made significant contributions to the field of ophthalmology through his extensive research and numerous scientific publications (791 in total).

He is mainly focused on the design and optical principles of multifocal lenses and was the first surgeon worldwide to implant toric, aspheric, and multifocal intraocular lenses. These unique achievements demonstrate his expertise and innovative approach to patient care. Recognized for his exceptional skills and knowledge, Dr. Auffarth has been elected multiple times as one of the most influential ophthalmologists in the world. 

Meet the speaker: Dr. Sunil Mamtora

Biography

Dr. Sunil Mamtora is an Ophthalmologist at the Bristol Eye Hospital and an Honorary Clinical Lecturer at the University of Bristol. His special interests include cataract surgery, medical education, slit lamp imaging, and emergency eye care.

Passionate about training and education, he previously chaired the ophthalmologists’ training group at the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. Dr. Mamtora regularly delivers training courses on both basic and advanced slit-lamp techniques, including imaging. His current research focuses on how slit lamp imaging can be used to enhance patient care and bridge the interface between primary and secondary eye care.

Meet the speaker: Dr. Maria Kugelberg

Biography

Maria Kugelberg is a senior consultant in the ophthalmology specialty and professor of ophthalmology, previously an adjunct professor at Karolinska Institutet. She is a very experienced and competent cataract and refractive surgeon with a subspecialty in pediatric cataracts, i.e. children born with cataracts.

Dr. Kugelberg worked at St. Erik Eye Hospital and at Capio Ögon part-time since 2016. She has been the operations manager for a clinic at St. Erik Eye Hospital. She received her PhD in 2004, runs a research group and became an adjunct professor at Karolinska Institutet in 2017.

Biography

Ophthalmologist Filomena Ribeiro, who heads the Department of Ophthalmology at the Hospital da Luz in Lisbon, holds a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Lisbon, a postgraduate degree in Leadership and Management of Health Institutions and is a fellow of the European Board of Ophthalmology. In 2023, she became the new president of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS).

She has been president of the Ocular Inflammation Group of the Portuguese Society of Ophthalmology and of the Cataract and Refractive Surgery Group, advisor and secretary of the Portuguese College of Ophthalmology and national representative of the European Union of Specialist Doctors. She also has a long curriculum as a teacher and researcher.
