Learn to treat patients without risk

Tier A: SLT device handling

The first tier comprises courses focused on basic laser handling. Trainees engage in abstract tasks to learn how to adjust aiming beam brightness and determine appropriate laser energy settings for varying levels of chamber angle pigmentation. An online course introduces the principles of selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT).

Tier B1: Slit lamp aiming

Tiers B1 to B4 include courses on slit lamp handling, SLT lens positioning and rotation, and laser beam aiming. These skills are practiced as separate, isolated steps to enhance learning. Ultimately, trainees must integrate these motor skills and apply them to the simulated patient's chamber angle. In tier B1, trainees initially practice the circular motion of the slit lamp and aim the laser without using the SLT lens.

Tier B2: Gonioscopy lens rotation

In tier B2, trainees practice rotating the gonioscopy lens independently of slit lamp movement. Guiding elements, including schematic drawings of the lens, indicate correct and incorrect lens positions. Trainees also learn the effects of lens tilting and practice maintaining proper lens alignment.

Tier B3: Combine lens rotation and aiming

After mastering the isolated steps of slit lamp motion, gonioscopy lens rotation, and aiming, trainees combine these skills. They are required to hit targets displayed in the anterior chamber angle. Hitting all targets necessitates coordinated rotation of the SLT lens and movement of the slit lamp, thereby preparing trainees for SLT treatment.

Tier B4: Custom laser "spot" pattern

Tier B4 provides trainees with the opportunity to repeat the tasks of B2 and B3, this time with a custom number of laser "spots" per lens rotation and a custom lasering direction.

Tier C: SLT training

Tier C enables trainees to apply and refine previously acquired skills. Courses in this tier focus on efficient SLT techniques. Trainees learn to aim at the trabecular meshwork, adjust laser energy according to pigmentation, distribute laser "spots" evenly and accurately, and reduce overall treatment time. Detailed assessments of treatment quality support further skill advancement.

Tier D: Clinical cases

The final tier presents clinical cases accompanied by comprehensive clinical histories. Trainees conduct thorough examinations of the retina and chamber angle, documenting their findings and diagnoses. Based on these assessments, trainees determine the advisability of SLT treatment and, in most cases, proceed to perform a complete SLT procedure.

Tier SUP: SLT device check

As a supplementary module, this tier includes courses on verifying the calibration of the SLT laser's aiming and treatment beams. Trainees learn that precise alignment of the slit lamp, aiming beam, and treatment beam is essential for accurate laser treatment.
